When I accepted my first leadership position, I assumed that expertise alone would be enough to earn my team’s confidence. The role promised professional growth, and I was eager to demonstrate that I could deliver results. Yet the project soon encountered unexpected constraints: a supplier withdrew, deadlines shifted and colleagues disagreed about priorities. At first, I responded by working longer hours and making decisions independently. Only after a difficult review meeting did I recognize how much valuable information I had overlooked. I began asking colleagues to challenge my assumptions and explain the practical consequences of each proposal. Although the project was eventually completed, the outcome was less important than the change in my approach. In hindsight, the setback was a pivotal moment. It taught me that effective leadership depends not merely on having answers but on creating the conditions in which better questions can be asked.
