Read the original short passage
For three evenings, Mara left the letter unopened beside the kitchen window. Each morning she moved it to make room for her coffee, and each evening she returned it to the same place, as though the paper had acquired a right to remain. Outside, the streetlights came on earlier than she expected. The neighbours’ conversations drifted through the courtyard, familiar enough to be comforting yet too distant to distinguish. She had spent years imagining what she would say if the past ever found its way back to her. Now that it had arrived in a plain white envelope, her carefully rehearsed words seemed strangely irrelevant. She traced the edge of the paper with one finger. Perhaps the letter contained an apology; perhaps it contained nothing she wished to hear. The kettle clicked off. Mara poured the water, watched the steam disappear and turned the envelope over once more. When the room grew dark, the letter was still sealed.
