Leading a Difficult Organisational Change

A regional services company announced a digital transformation programme intended to improve customer response times. Although the proposal had a sound business rationale, employees objected to the speed of implementation and the lack of consultation. Managers initially described resistance as an unwillingness to innovate. The new operations director took a different approach. She organised listening sessions, acknowledged legitimate workload concerns and explained which decisions remained open to discussion. Several teams volunteered to pilot the new system, documenting errors and suggesting improvements. Their feedback led to a revised timeline, targeted training and clearer responsibilities. The director did not abandon the strategic objective; instead, she distinguished essential outcomes from negotiable methods. By communicating trade-offs openly, she gradually secured broader support. Progress was uneven, and some colleagues remained sceptical, but the initiative gained credibility because employees could see how their contributions affected decisions. The experience illustrated that successful leadership involves more than persuasive speeches: it requires listening, transparency and a willingness to adapt.
