A Factory’s Sustainability Challenge

Module 6 · Environment and Sustainability

Read the case study

A medium-sized food manufacturer wanted to reduce the environmental impact of its operations without compromising product quality. An initial audit revealed that packaging waste and electricity consumption were its two largest areas for improvement. Management considered replacing all packaging immediately, but the purchasing team warned that the alternatives had not yet been tested for durability. Instead, the company launched a six-month pilot using recyclable materials for a limited product range. It also installed sensors that automatically switched off lights and equipment in unused areas. Employees received training on separating waste and reporting unnecessary energy use. By the end of the pilot, electricity consumption had fallen, although the new packaging was slightly more expensive. The company decided to expand the changes gradually and publish regular progress reports. Its managers emphasized that meaningful sustainability requires measurable results rather than attractive advertising claims.
