Finding Common Ground in a Contract Negotiation

Module 7 · Negotiation and Persuasion

Read the case study

When a small training company negotiated a new contract with a corporate client, the two sides initially disagreed about the price and delivery schedule. The client wanted a substantial discount and immediate implementation, while the training provider needed sufficient time to recruit qualified instructors. Rather than rejecting the proposal outright, the provider asked which requirements were essential and which were flexible. It emerged that the client’s main concern was ensuring that employees could begin training before a major product launch. The provider suggested a phased rollout: an initial group would start within two weeks, while the remaining groups would join the following month. In exchange, the client agreed to a longer contract and a smaller discount. Both parties documented their commitments and arranged a review meeting after the first month. The outcome demonstrated that successful negotiation often depends on understanding underlying interests instead of focusing exclusively on initial demands.
